Anti-illegal logging operatives in General Nakar, Quezon, intercepted over P44,000 worth of illegally cut forest products, including 40 pieces of red lauan lumber and logs, in January, the DENR reported on February 4.
The 827.46 board feet (about 1.95 cubic meters) of lumber were being transported down the raging Agos River from the Sierra Madre mountains by illegal logging syndicates.
The confiscation took place across three barangays, and DENR personnel displayed photos of the seized logs being hauled from the river.
No one claimed ownership of the confiscated lumber, prompting authorities to post notices of apprehension while transferring the materials to the DENR Cenro impounding area in Infanta for safekeeping.
The operation highlights ongoing efforts to protect the Sierra Madre, home to the largest remaining old-growth tropical rainforest in the Philippines, from illegal logging.
