SWS SURVEY NOTES DECLINE IN HUNGER AMONG ‘WALANG GUTOM’ BENEFICIARIES

A Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey showed that hunger declined more sharply among beneficiaries of the Department of Social Welfare and Development’s (DSWD) Walang Gutom Program (WGP) than among non-beneficiaries.

Hunger among WGP beneficiaries fell by 6.7 percentage points, from 33.6% to 26.9%, compared with a 1.4-point decline among non-beneficiaries.

Food insecurity among beneficiaries also dropped from 94% to 89.3%, while it slightly increased among non-beneficiaries.

DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian said the program now has 600,000 household beneficiaries and plans to add 150,000 more this year.

Under the WGP, beneficiaries receive PHP3,000 in food credits through electronic cards for nutritious food purchases.
