Vice President Sara Duterte’s legal team indicated it may challenge the House impeachment proceedings before the Supreme Court, arguing that the justice committee’s issuance of subpoenas and compelled testimony exceeds its constitutional authority.
Lawyer Michael Poa, spokesperson for Duterte’s defense, said a Supreme Court petition is “always a possibility,” though he did not provide a timeline for filing.
The House justice committee opened its first impeachment hearing without Duterte or her lawyers, issuing subpoenas for her statements of assets, liabilities, and net worth, as well as documents from the NBI and other agencies.
Duterte’s lawyers maintain that examining witnesses and compelling documents are functions of an impeachment trial, which only the Senate can conduct, citing the Supreme Court’s 2025 ruling that blocked a previous impeachment attempt.
Despite objecting to the proceedings, the defense said Duterte would comply with subpoenas for testimony while emphasizing that a proper trial should occur before the Senate.
