Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman Patrick “Pato” Gregorio said the agency, along with partner agencies, is extending P250,000 in financial assistance to the families of Ateneo players Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili following their untimely deaths.
Gregorio said the aid aims to help address the immediate needs of the bereaved families after the two players drowned during a team-building activity of the men’s basketball team in Aurora.
He added that the Sports Stakeholders’ Panel, composed of the PSC, DepEd, CHED, SBP, and NYC, is also working to establish the circumstances of the incident and push for athlete safety reforms.
Gregorio stressed that government agencies and the UAAP are cooperating in the investigation and are committed to taking appropriate action while also respecting Ateneo’s request for privacy.
He further assured that authorities are not indifferent to the tragedy and are acting swiftly to prevent similar incidents in the future.
