Senator Kiko Pangilinan emphasized the need to improve the creditworthiness of Filipino farmers to revitalize agriculture and ensure food security.
He noted that only 10 percent of farmers’ cooperatives are financially viable, urging the organization and capacitation of farmers to help them achieve economies of scale and bulk buying power.
Pangilinan cited Thailand and Taiwan as examples where most farmers are in cooperatives, which allows them to invest in equipment and facilities.
He highlighted the success of the Kalasag Farmers Cooperative, which partnered with the Jollibee Foundation to supply crops and construct cold storage facilities, thereby reducing post-harvest losses.
To support farmers, Pangilinan filed two bills focused on strengthening extension services and creating a bureau to fund and promote agricultural cooperatives.
