Francis Pangilinan on Thursday denounced what he described as disinformation surrounding the Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act, saying false claims about the law do not make Filipino families safer.
The law’s principal author stressed that the measure does not exempt minors who commit crimes from accountability and warned that misinformation diverts attention from issues such as illegal access to firearms, weak law enforcement, and inadequate community support.
Pangilinan also said the spread of false information stigmatizes children, undermines public trust, and politicizes the suffering of victims.
He urged the public to verify information before sharing it and to correct misinformation in their communities.
The senator also reiterated his condemnation of the Tacloban school shooting while calling for justice based on facts and evidence.
