Cavite Rep. Francis “Kiko” Barzaga has called for the decriminalization of abortion, specifically for rape victims.
In a Facebook post on September 6, Barzaga expressed sympathy for those whose futures are affected by pregnancies caused by sexual assault.
Currently, abortion is illegal in the Philippines under all circumstances, including cases of rape and incest, according to the Revised Penal Code of 1930.
Barzaga, an assistant majority leader in the 20th Congress, hopes to legalize abortion for this specific group.
It remains uncertain whether he will introduce a bill to pursue this change.
