Sen. Robin Padilla said he will continue defending former President Rodrigo Duterte and Vice President Sara Duterte until the Senate formally convenes as an impeachment court.
He said senators are still free to express political views while acting as legislators, adding that he is acting in defense of the Dutertes as a PDP-Laban member.
Padilla stressed, however, that he will stop taking sides once the Senate sits as an impeachment court and shifts into a judicial role.
He also said lawmakers can debate the issue before the formal convening, but must focus on evidence once the trial begins.
The senator made the remarks as the impeachment complaint against Vice President Duterte awaits action in the House of Representatives.
