Senators reminded Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon that they trust him, not the DPWH’s district officers, amid debates on restoring part of the agency’s 2026 budget.
The caution stems from Dizon’s own revelations of overpriced projects, which led the Senate to slash funds for over 10,000 DPWH projects.
Dizon proposed adopting the House version of the budget while allowing the agency to implement cost reductions, but senators warned that corrupt district officials could misuse funds.
Lawmakers also noted that the Senate’s initial cuts were based on Dizon’s admissions during budget hearings, creating tension over whether restoring the funds would undermine public trust.
The bicameral conference ended without a resolution, as Dizon deferred to Congress’s discretion, acknowledging that public skepticism toward DPWH remains a significant concern.
