Senator Francis Pangilinan urged the Department of Health (DOH) to fully enforce the Sagip Saka Act, which mandates public hospitals to buy food directly from local farmers and fisherfolk.
The law, authored by Pangilinan in 2019, aims to secure market access for agricultural workers while ensuring nutritious food for communities.
During a recent meeting, Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa committed to issuing a department order for its full implementation.
Pangilinan emphasized the need for cooperation from agencies and local governments to ensure farmers and fisherfolk benefit from the law.
He also warned he may withhold budget approvals from agencies that fail to present a concrete implementation plan.
