The House Special Committee on Land Use has approved the long-delayed National Land Use Act (NLUA), a measure that aims to create a unified national policy on land allocation, development, and protection.
Chaired by Rep. Francisco “Lalo” Matugas, the committee fast-tracked the bill, which has been pending in Congress for nearly 30 years.
The law seeks to shift the country from reactive land decisions to long-term planning, designating safe areas for settlements, protecting agricultural lands, and limiting development in high-risk zones.
Its passage aims to prevent disasters like the recent floods in Cebu and fires in Surigao City by addressing land use before lives and livelihoods are endangered.
As a priority of the Marcos administration, the bill will next go to the House Committee on Appropriations before moving to plenary readings for final approval.
