Health workers and advocates marched in Baguio City on May 7, calling for urgent reforms in the Philippine healthcare system, including higher salaries, better working conditions, and increased public health funding.
The protest, held during National Health Workers’ Day, also highlighted issues such as understaffed hospitals, low compensation, and the continued migration of medical professionals abroad.
Groups like the Alliance of Health Workers raised concerns over alleged harassment and red-tagging of community health workers, as well as the filing of charges against health personnel serving underserved areas.
They also renewed calls for the release of physician Ana Rilloraza-Leung and community health worker Marc Mendiola, saying the cases reflect broader threats faced by health workers.
Officials, including Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong, acknowledged their sacrifices and urged reforms in leadership, compensation, and overall management of the country’s health system.
