Leaders from Southeast Asian nations have begun arriving in Cebu for the 48th ASEAN Summit, with Brunei Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah becoming the first to arrive after personally flying his aircraft to the venue.
The summit comes as ASEAN faces challenges brought by soaring oil prices and supply chain disruptions linked to the Middle East conflict.
President Marcos called on ASEAN leaders to turn plans into concrete actions during the BIMP-EAGA summit and emphasized the importance of regional cooperation for economic growth and resilience.
On the sidelines of the summit, the Philippines and Vietnam agreed to pursue a long-term rice trade mechanism to strengthen food security for both countries.
ASEAN officials also stressed the need for stronger regional coordination on energy, food security, logistics, and trade to address rising global uncertainties and maintain economic stability.
