The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) on May 8 urged local government units (LGUs) to intensify community-based poverty reduction efforts, stressing that local action is key to addressing poverty at the grassroots level.
The agency said LGUs play a frontline role through Local Poverty Reduction Action Plans (LPRAPs), which translate national anti-poverty goals into targeted programs tailored to local needs.
It emphasized that the main challenge is ensuring these plans are properly funded and implemented to produce measurable improvements for vulnerable communities.
The DILG reiterated that poverty reduction requires strong coordination between national and local governments, in line with the administration’s broader social protection strategy and its goal of lowering poverty incidence to nine percent by 2028.
To support this, the agency has conducted nationwide workshops and signed an agreement with the National Anti-Poverty Commission to strengthen planning, capacity-building, and alignment of local initiatives with national priorities.
