The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) has urged local government units (LGUs) along the northern and eastern coasts of the Philippines to implement preemptive evacuation and increase coastal vigilance after an 8.7-magnitude earthquake struck off Kamchatka, Russia.
The advisory targets vulnerable coastal provinces facing the Pacific Ocean, including areas in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
Residents near shorelines were advised to stay away from beaches and move inland until the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) officially cancels the tsunami advisory.
The DILG instructed regional directors to ensure LGUs coordinate closely with their Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils and to activate emergency protocols.
Tsunami waves under one meter are expected to reach the eastern seaboard between 1:20 p.m. and 2:40 p.m., potentially lasting for hours.
