A Bureau of Customs (BOC) official at the Port of Subic was cited for contempt during a Senate hearing on the alleged smuggling of agricultural products.
BOC-Port of Subic Acting Chief of Assessment Juan San Andres faced the sanction after inconsistencies in his testimony regarding the release of three containers consigned to Berches Consumer Goods Trading.
Senator Erwin Tulfo flagged San Andres for allegedly lying, as DA Undersecretary Carlos Carag confirmed the containers were routed to a non-existent warehouse in Angat, Bulacan.
San Andres claimed the operation was coordinated with the DA’s Inspectorate and Enforcement unit, but Carag denied this and pursued BOC personnel over the unauthorized release.
Although the containers were returned to the port, San Andres failed to explain why they were released and could not justify the issuance of the mission order.
