The Bureau of Customs (BOC) has created the Balikbayan and OFW Action Center (BOAC) to address abandoned balikbayan boxes and protect overseas Filipino workers and their families.
The unit will operate under the Office of the Commissioner and report directly to BOC Commissioner Ariel Nepomuceno.
BOAC will monitor shipments, handle complaints against freight forwarders, and recommend legal or administrative action against erring parties.
It will also strengthen coordination and enforcement of policies involving balikbayan shipments.
The BOC said the new unit will use existing personnel and funding, with no automatic creation of new government positions.
