Education Secretary Sonny Angara said Congress holds the final decision on whether to continue the senior high school (SHS) component of the K-12 program, amid renewed debates on its relevance.
This follows Senate Bill 3001 filed by Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Estrada, which proposes scrapping SHS and reverting to a 10-year basic education cycle.
Angara emphasized ongoing efforts to improve the SHS curriculum with a pilot implementation of an amended program set for school year 2025–2026.
The revised curriculum will reduce core subjects from 15 to five and streamline four existing tracks into two, allowing more flexibility for students.
More than 800 schools nationwide, both public and private, are expected to participate in the pilot program starting June 16.
