An estimated 100,000 workers have been affected by the revocation of licenses of contractors involved in the flood control projects controversy, Senate budget sponsor Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian confirmed.
Many of these workers, mostly contractual, are now relying on government assistance and programs for temporary relief.
The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) is coordinating with contractor associations and offering employment aid, as well as reskilling and upskilling programs through TESDA.
Lawmakers highlighted the urgent need to support displaced families and ensure longer-term solutions for affected workers.
Gatchalian expressed hope that the private construction sector could absorb some of the displaced workforce amid a slowdown in government projects.
