The UAAP announced it will enforce pre-participation medical screenings during training sessions, following the recent deaths of two young student-athletes.
Gilas Pilipinas girls and NU Lady Bullpups player Ashlyn Abong, 18, collapsed and died during training in June, while UP recruit Israel Friday, 19, died under similar circumstances last week.
UAAP executive director Rebo Saguisag said the league is taking steps to strengthen medical protocols beyond competitions, making screenings a requirement even during team practices.
He emphasized that while emergency services are already present during games, more attention will now be given to ensuring athlete safety during training.
UAAP Season 88 opens on September 19, with new additions including boys’ tennis and the return of high school boys’ baseball.
