Australian Ambassador Marc Innes-Brown met with Senate migrant workers committee chair Raffy Tulfo on Feb. 18 to discuss the situation of around 400,000 Filipinos working in Australia, many in healthcare and skilled professions.
The ambassador praised the strong performance of Filipino workers and said Australia continues to seek more skilled Filipino labor.
Tulfo highlighted the “excellent treatment” of OFWs in Australia, noting no reports of abuse or mistreatment.
Innes-Brown also mentioned Filipino enrollment in Australian master’s and doctoral programs, which allow students to work and bring their families, and emphasized programs that let scholars apply their training upon returning to the Philippines.
He further discussed expanding Australian investments in infrastructure, education, trade, renewable energy, and agriculture, which are expected to generate jobs for some 45,000 Filipinos nationwide.
