Transport group Manibela urged the government to raise cash aid for public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers to PHP10,000 per month, instead of the current one-time PHP5,000 payout, citing rising fuel costs.
Chairperson Mar Valbuena said the current assistance barely covers drivers’ daily losses from the 120% increase in petroleum prices.
The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) began distributing the cash aid last week, starting with tricycle drivers, while jeepney drivers are set to receive theirs this week.
Valbuena noted that many drivers were unable to claim the aid, being tagged as unqualified despite waiting in long lines.
Aside from cash assistance, the Department of Transportation is providing fuel subsidies ranging from PHP1,500 to PHP10,000, though critics argue the relief mostly benefits oil companies rather than drivers themselves.
