Senators Panfilo Lacson and Erwin Tulfo raised concerns over reports that the Bureau of Internal Revenue’s (BIR) web-based taxpayer monitoring system is empty.
The issue surfaced during a Senate blue ribbon committee investigation into alleged corruption involving the use of letters of authority to examine taxpayers’ records.
Lacson questioned why the system, which tracks Preliminary Assessment Notices (PAN), Final Assessment Notices (FAN), and Form 0605 payments, had no data, suggesting it could hinder investigations.
BIR Commissioner Charlito Mendoza explained that the system was not updated when he assumed office last month, but confirmed that reconstruction efforts have already begun.
The senators urged the BIR to manually or otherwise reconstruct the records to ensure transparency and accountability in tax monitoring.
