REMULLA CALLS FOR TOUGHER CERTIFICATE OF CANDIDACY RULES

Ombudsman Jesus Crispin Remulla is urging the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to require political aspirants to declare under oath that they have no conflict of interest when filing their certificates of candidacy (COCs).

He proposed that candidates who make false declarations should face disqualification.

Remulla said the measure would strengthen the integrity of the election process.

The proposal comes as the Office of the Ombudsman intensifies its investigation into public officials allegedly involved in government contracts.

The office is also building cases against several incumbent lawmakers for possible violations of the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act.
