President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. called on ASEAN members to activate a regional fuel-sharing mechanism in response to the ongoing fuel crisis triggered by tensions in the Middle East.
Speaking at the Asia Zero Emission Community Summit, he urged the implementation of the ASEAN Framework Agreement on Petroleum Security, which allows member states to supply fuel to countries in distress.
Marcos said the Philippines is pushing for the early activation and testing of this system to strengthen regional preparedness.
He also supported proposals for joint oil stockpiling and improved energy cooperation with partners like Japan.
The appeal comes as the Philippines, heavily dependent on fuel imports, faces rising prices and inflation due to global supply disruptions.
