PH SEEKS US WAIVER EXTENSION TO SECURE RUSSIAN OIL SUPPLY

The Philippines has requested that the United States extend a sanctions waiver to allow continued imports of Russian oil amid supply disruptions linked to tensions in the Strait of Hormuz.

Energy Secretary Sharon Garin said the government is awaiting Washington’s response while pursuing alternative fuel sources such as Colombia, Canada, and India.

The move comes as rising global oil prices and canceled shipments have strained supply, with the country holding about 50 days’ worth of petroleum reserves.

The Philippines relies heavily on imports passing through the Middle East, making it vulnerable to geopolitical tensions in the region.

Officials emphasized the need to diversify energy sources to ensure a stable fuel supply and mitigate further price increases.
