Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. met with a Pakistani delegation exploring the possibility of supplying rice to the Philippines, emphasizing that any imports would be limited to actual domestic needs.
Pakistan highlighted a surplus in its rice production, while the Philippines stressed that imports must align with its push for rice self-sufficiency.
The talks also covered broader trade opportunities, including Pakistan’s interest in Indian buffalo meat and Philippine exports such as coconuts, seaweeds, and fish.
The Department of Agriculture said the partnership aims to stabilize supply chains amid global market volatility, climate risks, and geopolitical uncertainty.
Any rice imports would comply with existing regulatory, sanitary, and quality standards while balancing domestic production to protect farmers and consumers.
