Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. said the 60-day rice importation ban starting September 1 and the deferred tariff hike are balanced measures to protect both Filipino farmers and consumers.
The ban coincides with the peak harvest season to help local palay producers secure a reasonable income amid high rice inventories affecting retail and farmgate prices.
The government’s decision follows data showing rice stocks at a four-year high of 2.815 million metric tons as of July 1.
Meanwhile, the proposed tariff increase from 15 to 25 percent was postponed to avoid premature impacts on rice prices and maintain flexibility in protecting stakeholders.
The Department of Agriculture praised President Marcos for the timely action, emphasizing the need to balance affordability for consumers and sustainability for farmers.
