Senator Kiko Pangilinan has been named the new chairman of the Senate committee on constitutional amendments and revision of codes, replacing Senator Robinhood Padilla.
Pangilinan pledged to ensure a transparent, consultative process for any proposed changes to the Philippine Constitution, emphasizing that amendments must reflect the people’s aspirations and welfare.
He plans to hold public consultations involving experts, civil society, business groups, and citizens to gather input on possible constitutional reforms.
The leadership change follows renewed discussions on charter change in the Senate, triggered by Minority Leader Vicente Sotto III’s openness to amendments under certain conditions.
The move also sparked tension with Senate President Francis Escudero, who criticized Sotto for allegedly siding with the House of Representatives on the issue, a claim Sotto denied.
