The Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) has intensified efforts to combat the red-striped soft scale insect (RSSI) by expanding the use of chemical spraying drones and allocating P35 million for pest control.
The program aims to cover up to 25,000 hectares of infested sugarcane farms, with further expansion planned, while the Philippine Air Force and private partners will help transport and deploy pesticides.
The Department of Agriculture will also provide P10,000 in cash assistance to affected farmers, with subsidies expected to reach up to 20,000 beneficiaries.
About 93,898 hectares of sugarcane farms, mainly in Negros Island and Western Visayas, have been affected by the pest.
The government is also preparing long-term measures, including direct funding for local governments and a decentralized biocontrol network to help protect the sugar industry.
