The Office of the Ombudsman has launched a preliminary investigation into Sen. Loren Legarda and her son, Batangas 1st District Rep. Leandro Leviste, over alleged uncompleted solar energy projects that reportedly resulted in PHP10.44 billion in unpaid government obligations.
Ombudsman Jesus Crispin Remulla said the investigation will determine whether there is probable cause to file charges for alleged plunder, graft, and conflict of interest, claiming the promised energy projects were not carried out despite financial gains.
He said the case stems from the impact of the stalled projects on the country’s energy sector and long-term power projections.
Legarda denied the allegations, calling them “utterly false and baseless,” saying no public funds were involved and that she had not received any formal notice from the Ombudsman.
The complaint follows a Department of Energy filing before the Department of Justice in May against Leviste and officials of Solar Para Sa Bayan Corporation over the alleged failure to install renewable energy microgrids under the company’s legislative franchise.
