Pagadian City has scaled down its 57th Araw ng Pagadian celebrations and redirected around ₱15–₱20 million in savings to food and rice subsidy programs amid rising fuel prices.
Mayor Samuel Co said the move prioritizes residents’ needs over expensive festivities, with major events like the pageant and street party cancelled.
The funds will supplement national aid to support low-income families, especially those not covered by existing programs like 4Ps.
He said the local social welfare office is finalizing the list of beneficiaries to ensure assistance reaches those most in need.
Despite the cuts, the city will still hold select civic and cultural activities to mark its founding anniversary in a more modest celebration.
