Meralco is reviving discussions with US nuclear startup Valar Atomics as part of its push to develop small modular reactor (SMR) technology in the Philippines.
The utility said it is scheduled to hold talks with the Utah-based firm in the coming days while also keeping its options open to other SMR technologies.
Meralco emphasized that any partner must demonstrate a proven track record, noting caution against using the country as a testing ground for unproven systems.
The company’s nuclear roadmap, supported by a $2.8-million US Trade and Development Agency grant, is focused on feasibility studies, regulatory readiness, safety, cost competitiveness, and technology maturity.
The plan has faced scrutiny from environmental groups, including Greenpeace Philippines, which raised concerns over safety and the startup’s lack of an established industrial record.
