The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has raised the ceiling price for the waste-to-energy (WTE) auction to P9.2959 per kilowatt-hour, 16 percent higher than the initially proposed rate.
The higher green energy auction reserve (GEAR) price is expected to give power companies more flexibility in valuing their projects, but could also lead to higher electricity costs for consumers.
The Department of Energy will offer 230 megawatts of WTE capacity under the government’s special green energy auction program, with project delivery targeted between 2028 and 2029.
Registration for qualified suppliers begins this week, while the auction proper is scheduled from July 27 to Aug. 13.
The government said the WTE auction aims to strengthen the country’s waste management system through renewable energy development.
