Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian renewed his call for the immediate passage of a waste-to-energy bill, saying garbage buildup has worsened flooding across the country.
He cited recent monsoon rains that caused tons of trash to clog waterways and pumping stations in Metro Manila.
Gatchalian said converting waste into energy could reduce garbage in waterways while providing additional power.
His proposed Waste-to-Energy Act seeks a national framework for the industry while requiring facilities to meet environmental standards.
He also called for permanent evacuation centers in every local government unit to provide safe shelters during disasters.
