Environmental advocates and community groups warned that residents of Smokey Mountain in Tondo, Manila could face deeper poverty and environmental risks if a proposed P26.648-billion waste-to-energy incineration project pushes through.
The 100-megawatt facility, which would process about 3,000 tons of waste daily, has drawn opposition over alleged environmental violations by the project proponent and concerns about its impact on waste workers and nearby communities.
Critics from civil society groups and environmental organizations said the project could worsen social and economic conditions and run counter to existing land-use and environmental policies.
They also raised concerns about reported site preparations and the absence of required environmental clearances.
Community leaders and environmental networks are calling for the project’s cancellation, saying waste management solutions should prioritize humane, sustainable, and non-incineration approaches.
