The Metro Manila Council (MMC) has expressed support for the Department of Energy’s (DOE) waste-to-energy plan to convert the region’s garbage into fuel for renewable energy.
During a Nov. 4 meeting, MMC President and San Juan Mayor Francis Zamora said the council passed a resolution authorizing MMDA Chairman Don Artes to negotiate the project’s terms.
The initiative aims to reduce landfill dependence by up to 90 percent, addressing overflowing dumps and worsening flooding in Metro Manila.
President Marcos emphasized that waste-to-energy technologies are a legislative and environmental priority, with the NCR set as the pilot area.
The Waste-to-Energy Bill, part of the 20th Congress’s Common Legislative Agenda, seeks to ensure efficient conversion of solid waste into energy while maintaining environmental safeguards.
