The Department of Transportation (DOTr) plans to request a P2 billion budget for active transport projects in 2026 to meet its target of 2,400 kilometers of bike lanes by 2028.
Currently, the proposed 2026 budget allocates only P69.38 million, which DOTr officials say is insufficient to fund their planned projects.
So far, the agency has invested P5.08 billion to build 982 kilometers of bike lanes in major cities like Manila, Cebu, and Davao.
Beyond bike lanes, the DOTr is also constructing end-of-trip facilities such as shower areas to support commuters who bike to work.
To ensure sustainability, the department is developing a long-term active transport master plan focused on bike lanes and pedestrian pathways.
