The Department of Education (DepEd) reaffirmed its commitment to boosting literacy among Filipino learners as Education Secretary Sonny Angara officially opened the Philippine Book Festival (PBF) 2026 on March 12.
The four-day festival at SM Megamall in Pasig City showcases Filipino-authored books and creative works, promoting reading and critical thinking skills.
Angara emphasized that printed books remain vital in shaping learners’ education and identity, even amid digital transformation, while highlighting DepEd’s efforts to accelerate textbook delivery and achieve a 1:1 textbook-to-learner ratio.
The government has allocated P19.5 billion for textbook production, and the National Book Development Board (NBDB) received P206.571 million to support authors, publishers, and literacy programs.
Running until March 15, the festival features interactive workshops, author meet-and-greets, and initiatives aimed at strengthening the country’s reading culture and appreciation of Filipino literature.
