Department of Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel warned that rice prices could rise to as high as ₱62 per kilo by September due to the sharp increase in fertilizer costs.
He said higher production expenses, especially from urea-based fertilizers, could push prices up if farmers do not shift to alternative inputs.
Laurel noted that the projected increase is significantly higher than pre-conflict levels and could be avoided if modern farming alternatives are adopted.
He also proposed mitigation measures such as rice blending with cheaper imported rice and white corn to help stabilize market prices.
