The Department of Agriculture (DA) announced that the agricultural sector expects reduced damage this year due to more favorable weather conditions.
The DA-Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Operations Center reported minimal losses from Typhoon Bising and the southwest monsoon, with only PHP300,863 worth of palay damage affecting 13 farmers.
DA spokesperson Arnel de Mesa noted that this year’s rainy season is more beneficial compared to last year’s extreme El Niño and La Niña weather events.
With better local palay production expected, rice imports are also projected to decrease from last year’s record 4.8 million metric tons.
The DA aims to reach a local palay production target of 20.46 million metric tons by the end of 2025.
