As the PNP ramps up its crackdown on illegal firecracker manufacturing ahead of the New Year, advocacy group BAN Toxics urged the government to issue clear disposal guidelines for confiscated fireworks.
The group called on the DENR-Environmental Management Bureau to guide the PNP in properly treating hazardous firecracker waste to prevent soil and water contamination.
Science and Technology Secretary Renato Solidum advised that fireworks for disposal should be soaked, double-bagged, and sealed rather than buried.
The call for stricter disposal protocols comes after police arrested seven individuals in Santa Maria, Bulacan, for illegally manufacturing firecrackers.
Authorities confiscated firecrackers being assembled into “sawa” products, along with tools and materials worth an estimated ₱20,000.
