The August Twenty-One Movement (ATOM) has strongly criticized Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano for comparing his bloc’s struggle in the Senate to the fight of late opposition leader Benigno Aquino Jr. against the Marcos dictatorship.
In a statement, the group described the comparison as “laughable,” “insulting,” and “delusional,” arguing that Aquino fought against fascism, corruption, and a lack of accountability.
ATOM also accused Cayetano and his allies of representing values contrary to those championed by Ninoy and criticized their past support for the Marcos political camp.
The organization, which emerged following Aquino’s assassination in 1983, renewed its call for Cayetano to resign from the Senate, saying he had become a disgrace to the institution and the country.
Cayetano, however, defended his position and maintained that Aquino’s legacy belongs to anyone willing to continue the fight for the ideals he stood for.
