Science Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. said around 49 provinces may experience below-normal rainfall by October as a potentially “very strong” El Niño develops.
Most affected areas are expected to be in the Visayas and Mindanao, while some parts of Northern Luzon may see way-below-normal rainfall by November.
Solidum warned that farmers and fisherfolk could be heavily affected due to reduced water supply and possible declines in fish production.
PAGASA said there is a 92 percent chance of a weak El Niño forming between June and August, which could strengthen later in the year.
The government has activated measures to prepare for the dry spell, including water conservation efforts and the deployment of solar-powered irrigation pumps for farmers.
