Tensions have emerged within the opposition after Sen. Bam Aquino suggested that former President Duterte should face trial in Philippine courts for extrajudicial killings (EJKs) rather than at the International Criminal Court.
Former Senator Antonio Trillanes, who filed a case against Duterte and helped gather evidence and witnesses, criticized Aquino for making the statement, questioning his commitment during the height of the killings.
Trillanes accused Aquino of being insensitive to the victims’ families and implied he was aligning with Duterte supporters.
Meanwhile, Sen. Risa Hontiveros urged opposition forces to remain focused on unity and candidate selection for the upcoming elections.
Duterte is currently in The Hague facing ICC charges for crimes against humanity, with human rights groups estimating that up to 30,000 people may have been killed during his drug war.
