Former Nicolas Torre III criticized Rafael Vicente Calinisan for allegedly turning the National Police Commission into a venue for “trial by publicity” over a viral road rage incident involving a police officer in Pasig.
Torre said Calinisan showed a lack of impartiality by publicly condemning the officer before the formal investigation had concluded, stressing that due process should prevail over public pressure.
The controversy stemmed from a video showing S/Sgt. Erwin Lagua is pushing motorcycle rider Jhone Vincent Cayanes off his vehicle along C5 Road, while another clip showed the rider allegedly provoking the officer.
Calinisan earlier criticized QCPD officials for initially filing only slight physical injury and malicious mischief charges against Lagua, prompting police to later upgrade the complaint to frustrated murder and malicious mischief.
Torre warned that public condemnation before a final evaluation could unfairly damage the reputations and careers of police officers, urging authorities to let evidence determine accountability.
