The Teachers’ Dignity Coalition (TDC) has urged the government to strengthen school security and expand mental health programs following recent incidents of violence in schools.
The group cited the fatal shooting at a school in Tacloban City and the stabbing of a student in Las Piñas as reminders that schools must be safe for learners and teachers.
TDC called on the Department of Education and other agencies to reinforce security protocols, improve emergency preparedness, and strengthen coordination with law enforcement.
It also stressed the need for early mental health intervention, saying violence is often linked to deeper emotional and psychological issues.
While welcoming the planned hiring of 10,000 school counselor associates, TDC said more guidance personnel are needed and urged the full implementation of the Basic Education Mental Health and Well-Being Promotion Act.
