A Taiwanese government minister visited Taiping Island, a Taiwan-controlled but disputed feature in the South China Sea, marking the first such ministerial trip in seven years.
During the visit, Taiwan’s coast guard conducted drills, including vessel boarding and emergency rescue exercises, with support from the defense ministry.
The island is also claimed by China, the Philippines, and Vietnam, making it part of ongoing territorial tensions in the region.
Taiwan has rejected a 2016 international arbitration ruling that weakened its maritime claims around the island.
The government maintains its presence on Taiping through infrastructure such as a runway, pier, and lighthouse.
