President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. vetoed the bill that would have declared the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) as the National Polytechnic University, citing non-compliance with requirements set by the Commission on Higher Education.
The veto followed a directive issued in 2016 for an assessment that PUP has yet to fulfill.
Despite the veto, the president remains hopeful that PUP will achieve national university status once it meets the necessary criteria.
The proposed law aimed to strengthen PUP’s governance, expand degree programs, and establish a center for artificial intelligence and emerging technologies.
In response, PUP expressed disappointment, saying the veto hinders efforts to expand access to quality public education and jeopardizes funding for several campuses.
