The Philippine Army and the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) conducted their first combined live-fire drills during Exercise “Salaknib” at Colonel Ernesto Rabina Air Base in Tarlac on May 1 and 2.
More than 200 Philippine troops and about 40 Japanese soldiers took part, using tanks and combat vehicles in coordinated firing and tactical exercises.
The drills simulated locating, engaging, and destroying enemy targets while also rehearsing safety protocols for weapon malfunctions.
Senior military and defense officials from the Philippines, Japan, and the United States witnessed the historic exercise.
The activity supports the Philippine Army’s shift toward external security operations and stronger joint training with allied forces.
